Be Good. Do Good. Honoring George Subraj on His Birthday (02/27)

February 25, 2026

On his birthday (02/27), we remember and honor George Subraj (1945–2016) as a visionary Guyanese leader and compassionate community builder. Born in Georgetown, Guyana, he immigrated to New York in 1971 and, with his brothers, co-founded Zara Realty to provide “clean, safe, comfortable and affordable” housing. Today Zara Realty comprises dozens of apartment complexes housing thousands of families, just as George envisioned. He believed that “good giving is divine” – a motto he lived by as both a landlord and a philanthropist – and he devoted his life to improving others’ lives, especially within the Guyanese community he cherished. George’s philanthropic legacy shines brightest through life-changing medical missions in Guyana. Motivated by his belief that those blessed must give back, he organized Guyana’s first kidney transplant in 2008 and even sponsored pediatric heart surgeries to save children’s lives. The Zara-backed Subraj Foundation has since funded dozens more sight-restoring cornea transplants and life-saving kidney transplants – thousands of corneas and kidneys in recent years  – literally bringing vision and hope to people who otherwise had nowhere else to turn. His compassion inspired his family to continue, as son Tony Subraj says, “there is no greater calling in life than helping those in need”.  In 2025, the George Subraj Family Foundation, continuing George’s legacy of community support, made a landmark $1 million contribution to Northwell Health to advance cardiac care and address health disparities in Richmond Hill, Queens, and Guyana. This birthday reminds us that George’s work continues. The George Subraj Family Foundation was established to carry forward his values, focusing on health, education, and community empowerment in his name. We invite everyone to honor him today by living with purpose and generosity – whether that’s volunteering at a clinic, donating to a cause, or simply helping a neighbor – and in doing so, we ensure that “good giving is divine” in our own lives. In Tony’s words, George taught the family that there truly is no greater calling than helping others, and on his birthday we recommit to that calling with gratitude and hope for the future.
